The Cruelty Free Shop Newsletter - November 2015

Countdown to Christmas....

So many new vegan products have arrived this month that our shelves are groaning under their weight! From Gardein, Fry's, Naturally Choc, Matt & Nat, Angel Food, Damona, Melinda's, Montezuma's, Niulife and more, we've added over 60 new products this month alone!

To top that off our Christmas stock has started arriving: vegan Advent Calendars, chocolate Santas, brandy truffles, truffle gift boxes, candy canes and three types of vegan Christmas roasts (see below to pre-order yours).

Last week we hosted a Not The Cup event to give compassionate people an opportunity to dress up and drink champagne without having to support the cruelty of racing. Our event raised $1340 for The Coalition for Protection of Racehorses and other sanctuaries. The racing industry discards thousands of horses each year, many of whom end up at the knackers yard. Check out our Charity of the month for November; Tracky was one of the few lucky horses who was spared this grisly fate.

From the Cruelty Free Shop's Melbourne, Sydney and Online teams, Have a happy & compassionate November!

Charity of the month

Tracky is a discard of the racing industry who was destined for the slaughterhouse until he was rescued and taken to Gunyah Animal Sanctuary. Even though he won his racers more than $29,000, it wasn't good enough. After an injury he was declared a financial burden and sent to the sale yards where his fate was to be unceremoniously slaughtered at a knackers yard and most likely end up as dog food.

Thankfully Tracky was rescued by the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses and taken to Gunyah Animal Healing Sanctuary where his injuries will be treated and he can happily live out his live in peace.

Gunyah is a sanctuary for animals who have been exploited, neglected or abused, they are reliant on the support of donors to continue their wonderful work for animals. Please consider adding a donation for Tracky& Gunyah Animal Sanctuary to your next Cruelty Free Shop order.

Recipe of the month

We've not had any success finding a commercially produced Vegan Egg Nog in Australia so I thought I'd share this recipe for you so you can make your own - it sounds delicious!

Vegan Egg Nog
by Jolinda Hackett, About Food vegetarian food expert
Prep time 10 minutes, serves 4-6

4 cups soy milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp cinnamon

Whisk together half of the soy milk and instant pudding until thickened. Add the remaining soy milk and the cream and mix well. Add the remaining ingredients, except cinnamon. Allow to chill overnight before serving, and sprinkle with cinnamon just before serving.

Quote of the month

"It seems to me of great importance to teach children respect for life. Towards this end, experiments on living animals in classrooms should be stopped. To encourage cruelty in the name of science can only destroy the finer emotions of affection and sympathy, and breed an unfeeling callousness in the young towards suffering in all living creatures.” Eleanor Roosevelt
